So you should be comparing Awaken against those spells, not how many soldiers you could hire. I mean, for context, 1000 gold is also required to cast Hallow, Heroes Feast, Planar Binding, Reincarnate, Resurrection and Symbol. It's not a combat spell, just a neat magical trick that Bards and Druids can do, if they choose. Combine with Animate Objects for Toy Story level shenanigans. It's a great Druid spell as they can choose whether or not to prepare it, but for a Bard I would probably only take it if my intention was to cause a bit of chaos by having a nobleman's garden come to life or something like that. It's a very situational spell that might only be useful once or twice in a campaign, but there are a few spells like that, and it's only available to two classes. I imagine most DMs would run the beast/plant as mostly doing whatever the caster wants, but the spell is vague so that, if a player starts abusing the spell and awakening everything, the DM has good reason to not allow the player to have an army of bears. Getting a loyal companion for at least 30 days every time you cast it? Given enough time, that's one easy way to gather an army. If the Awaken spell guaranteed that the awakened creature would be entirely loyal to you, then it would need to be much higher than 5th level. Most spells that conjure allies or charm/dominate creatures only last a short time and require concentration. IMO it kinda makes sense that it has these limitations. On your last point, casting it on an aggressive target would be difficult anyway, given the 8 hour casting time. Also, for the sake of it, imagine animal friendship or similar spell having already been cast, so the creature isn't outright aggressive from the onset. I mean things that don't already have a connection to you. How would other DMs run this?ĮTA: I am specifically interested in non-familiar or animal companion types. I realize this is very much a DM interpretation type of situation, which is why I ask. So does it require some pretty significant hand-waving from the group to ignore the fact that this now Awakened creature is under no obligation to hang out with you? That it probably has very little motivation to follow you or even do what you say? It looks at you somewhat favorably, but why would it hang out with you? You're not its best friend, you're more like a friendly acquaintance if we go by other charm spell descriptions. I mean there are uses for it against NPCs and such, sure.īut if I Awaken a creature, give it 10 int, and it's charmed by you, it has no real reason to follow you around and do what you say, does it? I mean even a tree with int 10. It gives you advantage on charisma checks and the target won't attack you. I ask because the charm condition is only slightly useful in most situations, considering the many other options at your disposal.
